Golden Cap Pilgrimage Trail

by Michael Ford last modified 30 Jun, 2017 03:21 PM

This trail was officially launched on Sunday 30 June 2013 during an 11am ‘Team Service’ in Whitchurch Canonicorum.

A leaflet has been produced, with a map and brief details of each church along the Trail. Highlights include a font with a cover so impressive it requires a pulley system, a humorous carving of a headless squirrel, and a bench with magnificent views across Marshwood Vale and Lyme Bay.

The then Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, said “Trails are great fun. Families of all ages will enjoy exploring these churches and moving on to the next on the list. Both holidaymakers and residence will grow in their knowledge and appreciation of Christianity and village life in these churches.”

“I am delighted to encourage people to follow this Pilgrimage Trail in the Golden Cap Team; it has been very well organised and crafted. The rich Christian heritage, focused on Jesus of Nazareth, is deeply rooted in these parish churches. The history of England in this beautiful part of Dorset is manifested in the architecture, furniture and memorials.”

The twelve churches on the route are:

  • St Candida and Holy Cross, Whitchurch Canonicorum
  • St Paul’s, Wootton Fitzpaine
  • St John the Baptist, Fishpond
  • St Giles’, Chideock
  • St Gabriel’s, Morcombelake
  • St Mary’s, Catherston Leweston
  • St Andrew’s, Charmouth
  • St Michael the Archangel, Lyme Regis
  • St Andrew’s, Monkton Wyld
  • St John the Baptist, Hawkchurch
  • St Mary’s, Marshwood
  • St Stephen’s, Bettiscombe
