‘Sudan 40’ Celebrations Begin in Salisbury
Hundreds gathered at Salisbury Cathedral on Sunday for a spectacular service celebrating 40 years of the Salisbury-Sudan Link. Those attending included two bishops from the Diocese of Salisbury, ten from Sudan and South Sudan together with Provincial Secretary John Augustino, civic dignitaries and other overseas visitors.
The Bishop of Salisbury presided and the Bishop of Khartoum preached, with the Bishop of Sherborne in attendance. Highlights included the Sudanese Ladies’ Singing Group and a procession headed by a genuine Sudanese cross.
The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, said, “40 years is equivalent to a generation, and we’re seeing a new generation rise up; one with a renewed sense of love for God, a call to spread the word and with deep compassion for the lost and the hurting.”
He added, “Our Sudanese friends will be visiting various parts of the diocese, touching hearts and changing lives as they go. We look forward to the conference on Wednesday and Thursday, and to the next 40 years together.”
