Archdeacon finishes her "channel swim"
The Archdeacon of Wilts has completed her "channel swim" and is still raising money for spinal cord injuries.
After undergoing a hip replacement early this year, Archdeacon Sue Groom undertook the massive 80-mile swimming challenge in aid of Aspire, the charity that helps to gain independence for people paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury.
Sue "swam" the English Channel THREE TIMES in a series of shorter swimming sessions in the sea and at her local pool.
Her personal history of chronic pain caused by CDH (Congenital Dislocation of the Hip) and a whole raft of operations to deal with that – culminating in a hip replacement in February this year – has given her a particular affinity for anyone struggling with pain and disability.
So she was keen to take part in the sponsored swim to raise funds for Aspire, the charity that, in its own words, “provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury, supporting them from injury to independence.”
After completing the last few laps, Sue said:
"I am delighted to have completed my sponsored channel swim for Aspire – I managed 80 miles in the 12 weeks. I am much fitter than when I began the challenge and I will continue swimming regularly but much more leisurely for a while!
"Thank you very much to everyone who has encouraged and supported me along the way."
But while Sue set out to raise £1,000 for the charity, as she has already exceeded that goal, she intends to keep the Justgiving page open in case others want to give, saying:
"In total you have donated £1225. It is still possible to donate!"
