Celebrating the Difference

by Michael Ford last modified 16 Jan, 2019 10:39 AM

Year 5 pupils at St Martin’s Primary School, Salisbury learnt first-hand what it was like to be part of the young traveller community when they spent the day with the Diocese’s Chaplain to Gypsies and Travellers.

Sharing the day with Nicole Powell from Wiltshire EMTAS (Ethnic Minority and Traveller Education Service, the Revd Jonathan Herbert helped the pupils build a ‘bender’, a traditional outdoor shelter made of willow and hazel and covered with a tarpaulin, that can be used as a makeshift shelter for children and teenagers who live in nomadic communities.

The day, which included the assembly, shelter making and an art lesson, aimed not only to teach the Year 5s about the Traveller Community, but celebrated the difference in the cultures.
