Can't wait to Open the Book

by Michael Ford last modified 05 Mar, 2019 04:16 PM

A Year 6 class in Wiltshire has written a special thank you letter to their Open the Book team as the national Bible story telling programme celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The class at St Barnabas Primary School, Market Lavington wrote:
"Thank you for doing Open the Book with us all in Year 6. Thank you for helping us to be confident performers which helps us with our nerves! You have also taught us lots about Christianity."

The letter, written to the team from St Barnabas Church, was sent because the pupils wanted to show how much they had enjoyed their Open the Book assemblies:
"When you come to visit, we fill up with joy and you light up our day. All of the other classes can’t wait to watch Open The Book and all can’t wait to be in Year 6 so they can lead! Thank you for making all the props for each performance, they are always amazing. We hope you carry on inspiring children like us after we leave for Secondary School.

"We hope you have enjoyed teaching us as much as we love acting with you."

Open the Book began in 1999, when a small group of volunteers started going into a few schools in Bedford to read and act out biblical stories using the Lion Storyteller Bible. The project spread to Gloucestershire and then in 2007 a national charity was formed with Open the Book joining forces with the Bible Society in 2013.

The story telling is now done by nearly 17,000 volunteers and the programme reaches one in six schools in England and Wales and is extremely popular with churches and their schools in our Diocese.
