Who cares for the dementia carers?
A course that looks at who cares for those who care for loved ones with dementia is taking place at Sarum College this month.
The majority of people living with a diagnosis of dementia are cared for at home by a family member and Peter Kevern, Associate Professor in Values in Care at the University of Staffordshire contends that this hidden army of carers is often overlooked.
The one-day course on Friday 29 November will hear carers’ stories and reflect on their needs for practical and spiritual support.
Peter's work explores the interface between religion and health, ageing and/or death and he wants the day dedicated to hearing the stories and reflecting on the practical and spiritual support needs of carers.
The topics for the day will be shaped by the needs of the attendees, but may include:
- The ‘Self’ behind dementia: what’s happened to the person I loved?
- From Spouse to Carer: changing roles, changing expectations
- Isolation, Exhaustion, Guilt and Denial: where is God in all this?
- Is there a ‘spiritual meaning’ to dementia?
- Transformations, Transitions and bereavements: how does the nature of caring change?
