Well-known broadcaster joins Cathedral Chapter

Ordained in Guildford Cathedral in 1978, Tim served his curacy in Farnham before becoming Chaplain to King Alfred’s College, now the University of Winchester.

In the 1980s, he planted a new church in Chandler’s Ford before becoming vicar of Fordingbridge, developing a pattern of partnership ministry between the town and surrounding villages. It was whilst in Fordingbridge that Tim joined the BBC.

In 2005, Tim moved to a part-time post leading Southampton’s city centre church, St Michael’s, and in 2014 took the decision to step back from parish ministry and concentrate on his work in religious broadcasting.

Tim has worked across the local radio network of 39 stations producing a number of projects including the network's contribution to BBC Radio 2's Faith in the World Week.

As part of our Cathedral’s governing body, Chapter members contribute their varied experience and insight to the running of our mother church.

In addition to his broadcasting work, Tim has been a member of Salisbury Diocese’s Communications Advisory Group, supporting the work of the Communications team at Church House in Salisbury and the DEC in Wilton, and over the course of his career has sat on many diocesan committees looking after areas as diverse as housing and budgets. For a number of years, he was a Bishops' Selector as well as a part-time tutor preparing candidates for ordination.

Speaking about his appointment, the Revd Tim Daykin said:

“It is a honour and a privilege to be asked to join Chapter, the body that is responsible for securing the future of the Cathedral and its ministry for it for generations to come. In this new role I hope to put my experience and insight both as a minister of the Church of England and a broadcaster to good use.”

The Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos said:

“Tim serves the Church as a priest and as a broadcaster: he understands the world beyond churchyard and beyond the Close, particularly the world of the media and the role of faith within it. As we navigate our way through the turbulence of these times, he will be source of wisdom and inspiration. Salisbury Cathedral is fortunate to have his experience to draw upon as we plan for the future.”
