Two Thriving Academies

The Archdeacon of Wilts has visited two Devizes primary schools which are part of the Diocese of Salisbury Academy trust to see pupils at work and worship.

The Ven Sue Groom said, “The first engagement that I fulfilled on appointment as the Archdeacon of Wilts in February 2016 was to open the new library at Southbroom St James School, so it was a delight to come back to the school and its near neighbour.

“Since then, St James’ has been through difficult times but it was encouraging to read the recent progress report by Ofsted, which was extraordinarily positive.

“I was also delighted to be able to visit The Trinity. At both schools, I was able to get an impression of string progress from the staff, chair of governors, parish priest and pupils.

“It was inspiring to walk around the schools and see the wonderful displays of the pupils’ very creative work, and it was a privilege to be able to lead collective worship for attentive and engaged children in both schools.”

Hannah Allender, Head of School at The Trinity Primary Academy added, “We were very fortunate that the Achdeacon paid a visit to The Trinity. Part of her visit was spent in the classrooms seeing our learning in action.

“Sue also lead an act of worship on the theme of friendship using the story of Naomi and Ruth. This story taught us an important message about friends sticking together through the good and bad times.

“We also really enjoyed her teaching us actions to remember and understand the Lord’s Prayer!”

Gareth Bailey, Head of School at Southbroom St James Academy, added, “The Academy was delighted to have a visit from Archdeacon Sue. During the visit, Archdeacon Sue and the Revd Keith Brindle from St James’ Church were given a tour of the school and had time to see children at work. Archdeacon Sue led a Whole School Worship service with a focus around friendship which is our value for the term.

“We valued having a representative of the Diocese to lead worship, and the children very much enjoyed this experience, and having the opportunity to take part where requested. The children and staff welcomed the visit and look forwards to possible visits in the future.”
