Bishop Nicholas has paid tribute to Bishop Michael Perham, who died on Easter Monday

The Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam, Bishop of Salisbury, has paid tribute to his friend, the Rt Revd Michael Perham, retired Bishop of Gloucester, who died on Easter Monday after a battle with a malignant brain tumour.

Bishop Nicholas said, “Bishop Michael grew up in Dorchester and was a Team Rector in Oakdale in Poole. Many people in this Diocese have good reason to give thanks to God for him.

“In his final year and a bit, he made a marvellous contribution to the Diocese in chairing the Pray Forum as part of our Renewing Hope – Pray, Serve, Grow. He died as he lived, in the love of God and with thanksgiving. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Bishop Michael preached his last sermon on Ash Wednesday in Salisbury Cathedral and helped lead a series of events exploring prayer around the Diocese of Salisbury as recently as February.

The full text of Bishop Michael’s final sermon, preached in Salisbury Cathedral on Ash Wednesday, is available here.

ADDENDUM 24 April: Bishop Michael’s funeral will be held at 2 pm on Saturday 6 May in Gloucester Cathedral.
