A verger at Wimborne Minster has been awarded a professional qualification with top marks.
John Hughes, who has been a Verger at the Minster Church of St Cuthburga for seven and a half years, obtained the Church of England Guild of Vergers Diploma with Distinction. This involved undertaking a correspondence course over last four years. The subject: ‘everything to do with being a Verger’!
John’s duties at the Minster include looking after the building, including opening and closing it daily, preparations for all the services and other events, being in a front of house role, and dealing with questions from the visiting public.
John was presented with his Diploma and Academic Hood at the Annual Training Conference of the Church of England Guild of Vergers at West Malvern in Worcestershire.
A local presentation was made to John by the Rector of Wimborne Minster, Canon Vanessa Herrick at the end of the recent Patronal Festival Parish Eucharist. The Patronal Festival, which normally takes place on the first Sunday in September each year, is the occasion when the Minster remembers St. Cuthburga who founded a Benedictine Nunnery at Wimborne around 705.
