Tolling a bell 100 times

by Michael Ford last modified 12 Feb, 2021 08:45 PM

A number of parishes have responded to a last-minute informal invitation to mark 100,000 tragic Covid-19 deaths by tolling their church bells.

Town Councillor Steve Bucknell was quick off the mark, saying: "I will be tolling the tenor at Royal Wootton Bassett."

Sample clip here.

Andy Morris at St Michael and All Angels, Urchfont, said:

"We marked 100,000 tragic Covid-19 deaths by tolling our 21cwt tenor bell 100 times, as suggested, at midday on Sunday the 31st of January."

Anthony Oliver in Wimborne also made arrangements, saying:

"The tolling was completed successfully, during which time the Rector and Curate prayed in the Minster for all those lost during Covid-19. A Press Release was sent to Radio Solent and Katie Martin mentioned it on her Sunday morning programme."

The Revd Maria Shepherdson said:

"We actually did this already on Wednesday evening at WO (one of the wardens rang) and at Avebury too. We asked people to light candles in windows at the same time at 6pm and again for Holocaust Day at 8pm."

There is a video clip here.

Our thanks to the Revd Lydia Cook for the original invitation, and to those who sent responses to our appeal.
