'The Vision' of Salisbury Cathedral Garden

by ajack last modified 10 Nov, 2021 04:13 PM

How much is a view worth? – well one of Salisbury Cathedral has been valued at 3million pounds.

Despite the painting of Salisbury Cathedral by John Constable being a sketch of a finished painting which is now displayed in the Huntington Library and Art gallery in San Marino, California, it is expected to sell for a huge £2 - £3m this December in London.

The sketch is titled, “Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds (1823)”, although Constable’s family knew it as “The Vision”.

Constable did a pencil sketch of this view originally, then an oil sketch, which prompted the Bishop of Salisbury to commission a finished painting of the Bishop’s garden view which is now exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Bishop Fisher commissioned a second painting when his daughter got engaged and then a third painting two years later!

Clementine Sinclair, the head of Old Masters Evening Sale at Christie’s London expects there to be a lot of interest, as there always is for Constable’s work.
