Teens Celebrate Sudan

by Michael Ford last modified 26 Jun, 2018 03:30 PM

Two teenagers from Shillingstone, near Blandford Forum, go to London on Saturday 5 March to celebrate Sudanese independence. The trip forms part of their parish’s mission work for Sudan.

The Sudan Link

Ann-Marie Christopher and Dan Kellaway-Moore attended a Study Day in September 2010 run by the Sudan Link Committee. They also organised a ‘Sudan Fete’ to raise funds towards education costs for children in Lui, and invited the Sudanese Ladies’ Singing Group to attend. They recently spent a weekend in mid-February with Lubna Roro, leader of the North London-based group.

Parish event organiser Anne Powell said, “Ann-Marie and Dan are an inspiration to all of us. It’s clear that the link with Sudan has been a life-changing experience for them: they’ve learned so much already and are keen to develop the link much further.”

As well as fundraising, members of the Shillingstone Link share expertise, including creative arts and vocational training, and learn from their Sudanese colleagues in return.

The link between Lui and Shillingstone is now in its second year and has grown from a two-way to a four-way partnership.  Lui Diocese also has relationships with Missouri Diocese, USA and Lund Diocese, Sweden (part of the Lutheran Swedish Church).

Notes
The 3 western partners, co-operating in order to support Sudanese Christians in Lui, sent a joint mission in November 2010. Members of the mission used their professional skills to provide workshops for groups of local pastors and people leading the church in the areas of Youth, Sunday School and Mothers’ Union.  They also provided consultancy on building projects and gave computer training as well as sharing worship and prayer.  The UK missioners recently presented their experiences to the Blackmore Vale Deanery Synod and are now touring parishes in the Blackmore Vale with a presentation of photographs, music and video from Lui.
