Teenage organist's Cambridge 'Bach-a-thon'
A 15-year-old organ scholar from Devizes has taken part in a 24-hour Bach-a-thon event in support of a charity in Zambia.
Anna Hallett, who sings in the choir and plays the organ at St John’s Church, Devizes, made the recording on her home instrument earlier this month. Her performance was streamed on the college’s Facebook page as part of the marathon which began at 12 noon on Monday 22nd June.
Anna holds an RSCM Pipeline Organ Scholarship and first began learning on the Diocese of Salisbury’s PipeUp Scheme for young organists.
Speaking after the Bach-a-thon she said:
“For the last 4 years, Pembroke College Cambridge has organised a 24-hour Bach-a-thon. The idea this year was that we played on an organ we had access to during lockdown, and sent in recordings. My Bach repertoire isn’t vast just yet, but this allowed me to explore some of the Chorale Preludes – short and sweet pieces.
"As well as promoting the organ in one of the best ways possible, nearly £7000 was raised for the Butterfly Tree Charity, which provides food for Zambians impacted by Covid-19.”
The Diocese of Salisbury’s PipeUp Scheme for young organists has grown substantially since its inception in 2008 and provides subsidised organ lessons for children in the Diocese aged between 8 and 18.
