Supporting a House with a Bike

by Michael Ford last modified 10 Sep, 2019 05:26 PM

The Chair of our diocesan Safeguarding Management Group is embarking on an epic charity challenge this month: 250 miles by bike.

Steve Long says:

"Once again I am going to mount my bike to raise some much needed money for Julia's House and would be really grateful if you could help. This year I am going to attempt a new challenge by climbing a mountain range: the Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca.

"I will be cycling a total of 250 miles over 3-and-a-bit days and climbing in excess of 20,000 feet. While over the years I have cycled thousands of miles, the challenge of a mountain range is something I am a little nervous about but I am assured the views are worth it!

"I will be paying for all the expenses associated with the trip but to make it really worthwhile I aim to raise more than £1,000. If you are able to help me I know how much your support will be appreciated by the staff at Julia's House as well as myself."

Julia's House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children's Hospice charity provides frequent respite care for children and support for their families at home, in the community and at our hospice.

In 2018 staff at Julia's house provided nearly 30,000 hours of support including care therapy, end of life care, and bereavement support to 38 families across Wiltshire and Dorset. At present some 166 families are registered to receive support.

Of those 38 bereaved families, sadly 8 children passed away - 3 in Dorset, 5 in Wiltshire.

Julia's House provides a range of valuable services to the whole family including one specifically for siblings, complementary therapy and others such as 'Mini Mates' for pre-school children, 'House Mates' (whole families during school holidays), 'Youth Club' (more able children from age 12 yrs) and 'Great Mates' (grandparents and close family friends).

To provide these services, Julia's House needs to raise over £8 million a year, and relies heavily on the local community to fund 94% of all services.
