Sudan: New Beginnings
The Bishop of Kajo Keji, Anthony Poggo, will visit Salisbury and the Chalke Valley on the weekend of 11 and 12 June, one month before the creation of South Sudan.
Bishop Poggo and Bishop Kings in discussions
He will assist the Bishop of Sherborne, Dr Graham Kings, at a diocesan confirmation service in Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday 11 June at 6.30pm.
Bishop Poggo will preach at Holy Trinity Church, Bowerchalke on Sunday 12 June at 9.30am and answer questions during a family service at St Michael & All Angels, Coombe Bissett at 11.00am.
In the afternoon from 2-4pm he will attend the annual Sudan Medical Link Garden Party at the Bishop of Salisbury’s house, South Canonry 71 The Close Salisbury. Emmanuel Murye – a Sudanese student at All Nations College Hertfordshire – will accompany him.
The Bishop’s visit comes at a time of heightened tensions between North and South Sudan. In the last week there has been serious fighting between the armies of the northern and southern governments in the disputed border area of Abyei, where there are significant oil supplies. 28 soldiers have been killed, and civilians forced to flee their homes.
Dr Kings said today, “‘I am delighted to be sharing a Cathedral confirmation with Bishop Anthony, with whose father, Benaiah, I studied at Cambridge. We will be together again in Juba to mark the birth of the Republic of South Sudan on 9th July.”
He added, “I am sure Bishop Anthony will join with me in calling on all in the Diocese to pray fervently for a peaceful transition from one nation to two, and for renewed efforts to ensure the disputed border issues are solved without further violence.”
