A Flavour of Advent across the Diocese
Advent is a special time for all of us, and there's no right or wrong way to observe this festive season. Whether reading a special Advent poem, or simply spending your time serving others, however you choose to observe this season, make sure you take time to prepare internally for the true meaning of Christmas. If you’re stuck for ideas on what to do this Advent, or want to start a new tradition, take a look at these creative ideas from across the Diocese.
Get crafty
Four classes at Salway Ash CofE Primary School, Bridport were challenged to put their imaginations to the test and create their own Advent wreaths.
Shepherds Delight
On 30th November Bishop Andrew and Revd Carole Owen, Community Chaplain in Warminster lead 27, year 2, shepherds from Minster CofE School, Warminster to launch the 2021 Messy Nativity Advent Sheep Trail. The procession of shepherds and sheep were then blessed by Bishop Andrew in the presence of Deputy Town Mayor Revd Denis Brett.
A total of 28 unique sheep were lovingly knitted by ladies from the Minster and St John's Church, 12 of which will be placed in shop windows for the families to spot and note their names; Betty, Bleat, Baarry, Buubly, Darcy, Angel, Buttercup, Shaun, Timmy, Baarbara, Ewenice and David Attenborough. Tag us on social if you spot a sheep!
A Nativity - with a twist!
Have you ever been to a travelling Nativity? Well, St James' in Poole are hosting their Christmas Nativity and it’s just that, spectacular! Starting outside The Custom House on Poole Quay, then moving through the historic surroundings of Poole Old Town, and finishing in the grounds of St James' Church, the Nativity promises to be one you won’t forget. It’s free to attend (donations encouraged) and be sure to hang around afterwards.
There will be free refreshments and goody bags for every child.
Christingle without the waste!
Instead of creating a Christingle out of oranges, ribbons, cocktail sticks and sweets, St James’ is also venturing outdoors to the ‘Little Green’ where all those who attend will come together and become a visible Christingle. Everyone is welcome to attend from 4.30pm on Sunday, 5 December 2021 and are asked to wear something red (bring a red flag if you have one!).
Setting a special tradition
The team at Holnest Church hosted their ‘Darkness to Light, Advent Hope’ Service last Sunday. This Service was the first in what may hopefully become a very special tradition of Advent Services in Holnest Church. Speaking about the Service, Jenny Nelson, said:
“Advent gives us time to discover the beauty of our church buildings as we enter a special time of waiting and stillness between God’s promise and fulfilment in the coming of Jesus. There is the promise of God’s glory; the promise that the darkness is scattered by God’s sure light.”
St Michael's Church, Hamworthy has already hosted their Darkness to Light service. They said:
“It was wonderful to gather together at St. Gabriel’s to mark the beginning of Advent, where we spent time thinking about stories of redemption. A beautiful, reflective service”
