Solidarity in Song
The Royal School of Church Music, RSCM, has been working to support church choirs through the challenges the latest restrictions on singing from the government, and is attempting to update national guidance.
Together with key partner organisations Making Music, The Association of British Choral Directors and The Incorporated Society of Musicians, RSCM has been advocating a revision to the guidance which states that only six people can sing together, and to enable a safe return to choirs singing again.
RSCM seeks to provide a positive solution alongside the lobbying, saying:
"The participative ‘Big Music Sunday Service’ on Sunday 6th June will provide comfort and support to all the millions of people who feel cut off – from singing, from worship and from each other.
"Live-streamed on the RSCM’s YouTube channel, from the magnificent Lichfield Cathedral at 6pm on Sunday 6th June, the Big Music Sunday Service will be an opportunity for singers to stand together, albeit virtually, as a large collective voice, despite the challenges and frustrations everyone is facing further to this recent Government update.
"Distinctly different from other online services, it allows for full participation from home."
RSCM Director Hugh Morris adds:
“RSCM Music Sunday is a celebration of the special place of music in worship. With choirs so severely restricted again at present, the Big Music Sunday Service is a powerful way for singers to come together in solidarity in song, even if that has to be online.
"Last year, 2000 people joined us live; and we want more to do so this time in these trying circumstances. Singers can also join me for an online rehearsal I shall lead on 3rd June so they can prepare to join in with full heart and voice on the day.
"The music is rich and varied, and comes from around the world – which seems especially appropriate at this time, as we all come together to support each other."
Supporting resources, including downloadable music packs for choirs, and copies to order for individual singers, are available through the RSCM web-shop.
The Big Music Sunday Service is set to be a special event and everyone is encouraged to spread the invitation to join in as far and wide as possible. BBC Songs of Praise will also be featuring RSCM’s Music Sunday on their programme on Sunday 6th June, where they will be exploring the power of music in worship.
