Solar Cathedral

Wiltshire Council has approved Salisbury Cathedral's application to install 92 solar panels into its cloisters.

It comes as the Church of England is working towards its aim of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2045.

One of the steps to get to that point is to stop heating cathedrals and looking into how the Church of England heats its 40,000 buildings, among them many large cathedrals.

The panels will be installed on the south roof of the cloisters, and won't be visible from the ground to visitors of the 13th century cathedral.

The panels should generate over 30,000 kWh per year of electricity, the equivalent of 8 average UK houses.

This will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the cathedral over a year by approximately 7.5 tonnes, with the panels in place for a minimum of 20 years.
