Singing for something to go on
A choir, based in St Nicholas' Church in the village of Winterborne Kingston in Dorset, is on a mission to raise money for a much-needed church toilet.
The choir, Cantate, which meets every Tuesday, will be performing a fun, family-friendly concert on Easter Monday (22 April) at 2pm in aid of St Nicholas’ Church.
The choir’s director, Sarah Pottinger, said: "We’re asking people to spend a penny in both senses of the term. Never mind singing for supper, we’re singing for a loo."
"We’ve all experienced that dramatic 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'-style dash into a church to find that it’s without a toilet. It’s not unknown for someone to nip into the churchyard in the vain hope that there is some strategically placed greenery."
Current estimates put the cost of installing a toilet at £20,000. All donations from the Easter concert - which will be collected using a chamber pot - and those received through their crowd-funding page ‘WENEEDTHELOOFUND’ will go to St Nicholas' Church.
The Revd Justin Pottinger, said: "Trying to raise £20,000 for a new toilet is no mean feat. It may seem like a steep sum but as we’re dealing with an historic building with consecrated ground, the necessary planning issues and the works required, have just kept adding to the costs."
Sarah Pottinger continued: "The church is such an important part of our community but its use is hindered by its lack of a toilet. It’s not only for congregations or those using the church regularly, but any visitors can use it when the church is open."
