"Selfless" teacher reaches national finals
On Thursday 20th May, Collingbourne School was visited by the BBC to report on some exciting events happening at the school.
The BBC interviewed Mrs Jill Stevens about her recent success in reaching the final of ‘Pearson National Teacher of the Year’.
Headteacher Dan Crossman says:
"Jill has been a key driver in helping the school reach the top 1% nationally for Writing and Maths.
"More than this though, Jill has designed, funded and created her own Forest School area so that our children might learn to care for God’s creation and experience true awe and wonder in our beautiful setting.
"The children told the BBC all about crafting magic willow wands, toasting delicious sausages over the fire and using equipment such as hand drills and saws. Perhaps more importantly, they spoke of their appreciation for the natural world around them and how proud they were of their teamwork skills.
"Jill’s nomination also drew praise for her selfless work during lockdown. Collingbourne teachers delivered live lessons everyday through the magic of Microsoft Teams and every child had access to their own 365 account with remote support available.
"As ever, Jill went the extra mile, sending hand-made crocheted hedgehog finger puppets to her ‘Hedgehog’ class and even drilling a whiteboard into her kitchen wall.
"The school has much to be proud of and it was lovely to celebrate this success with the article broadcast on BBC Points West!"
