Sacred People, Sacred Earth
Bishop Nicholas has signed up to an international statement and call to action ahead of COP26, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in November 2021 in Glasgow.
Greenfaith has brought together a multifaith coalition of established and emerging climate leaders in faith communities across 14 countries to create an ambitious statement 'Sacred People, Sacred Earth' and an accompanying day of action concerning both climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The intention is for the statement to be publicly released on 18th November, during the launch of GreenFaith International Network.
A broad base of faith-leaders who already have signed includes:
- Former Archbishop Rowan Williams
- His Eminence Cardinal Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development
- Prof Azza Karam, Secretary General, Religions for Peace International
- The Revd Dr James Bhagwan, General Secretary, Pacific Conference of Churches
Guy Wilkinson is our former Bishop's Adviser for Inter-Religious Affairs.
He says:
"We are leading in asking for signatories in this country and have approached a wide range from across the faith communities.
"The aim is that once released, there will be a major campaign to invite religious communities and individual people of faith to sign the statement. The GreenFaith International Network will then call for a 'Year of Action' towards COP26, pressing urgently at the national and international levels for a compassionate, just response to Covid-19 and the climate emergency."
