Bishop Edward heads to Rome - strictly by bike
Bishop Edward making his way to Rome – not in any theological sense, but by bicycle.
The famously keen pedaller is undertaking the whopping 1,200 mile journey to raise money for the Friends of Erlestoke Prison.
Bishop Edward, who departed Canterbury Cathedral early this morning, said, “I love cycling but over a thousand miles in the heat of July will test even my passion for pedal power.
“Our group will follow an ancient pilgrimage route, the Via Francigena, which was first recorded by Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, in AD 990. We’ll be following almost exactly the same route he travelled on a visit to see the Pope over a thousand years ago. By happy coincidence, Sigeric was the 7th Bishop of Ramsbury before moving to Kent, and I am now the 15th (there was a gap in between).
“The pilgrimage will take 14 days of cycling. I will be keeping in touch with home via my blog, bishopedward.wordpress.com, and I hope to carry out some radio interviews over the phone as well.
“Erlestoke Prison is near where I live. The Friends support the prisoners, their health, well-being and rehabilitation, as well as their families. They fund courses and training, and have donated to the Chapel.”
