Retirement of Church Newsletter Editor after 45 years

by Michael Ford last modified 09 Feb, 2022 04:33 PM

A Parish Newsletter commenced in the newly formed United Benefice of All Cannings. Bishop’s Cannings and Etchilhampton in 1977. Since that time, Mrs Sue Cowdry has been responsible for its’ editing, publication and distribution.

She has also encouraged local businesses and trades people to advertise in the magazine, ensuring that it has been self-financing and making a small profit for the parish churches.

Monthly covers have been drawn by local artist, Alan Padwick, and the publication is distributed by volunteers to 385 people in the three parishes.

Sue has now decided to retire after 45 years of dedicated service. Her retirement was marked following the Sunday Service at Etchilhampton Church in January. She was presented with a bouquet and a cheque for £400, which was raised from a local collection.

Sue referred to the changes that had taken place over the previous 45 years, from using skins on a duplicator to the current use of digital publication methods.

She said, “It has been a long haul, nurturing the news around the parishes, but not the end, with a new Editor and the efficiency of new technology. I would like to thank everyone, past and present, who helped deliver, staple, count or collect money.”
