New Cathedral Canons bring diocesan-wide experience

The canons, who join at the invitation of the Bishop of Salisbury, have been chosen for their special insights into different aspects of society - expertise that the Dean and Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body, can draw upon when making decisions and evaluating their activities.

The Reverend Jonathan Herbert has worked extensively in mental health and addiction. He also serves the Diocese of Salisbury as Chaplain to Gypsies and Travellers and was installed along with the Revd Tim Daykin, who broadcasts to Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with listeners from as far afield as the United States, Finland and Australia listening via the Internet.

Tim has worked across the local radio network of 39 stations producing a number of projects including the network's contribution to BBC Radio 2's Faith in the World Week. He also supports the communications work of the Diocese of Salisbury.

The third Canon is the Revd Lucy Holt, who trained as a General Nurse at Guys Hospital and worked in Oncology and Paediatrics before becoming a Registered Health Visitor. Lucy was ordained and worked in Oxford Diocese before moving to Poole in 2013 to become Rector of St James.

The three canons were installed as Non-Residentiary Canons at 5.30 Evensong on Thursday, 2 May and were allocated a stall in the Cathedral Quire, joining the Cathedral's extended 'family'. The College of Canons meets twice a year, providing feedback on Cathedral activities and policy decisions made by Chapter.

They will be joined by Jonathan Leigh, who was Master of Marlborough College until 2018, who was installed on Thursday 3 October 2019 as a Lay Canon.

Now retired and living in Wiltshire, he brings a lifetime’s experience of education and working with young people to the College. Jonathan was a chorister at St George’s, Windsor, before moving on to Eton College and subsequently Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he was a Tenor Choral Exhibitioner and read History.

Announcing the new appointments, the Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos said:

Like the canons that have gone before them, we know that these newly appointed members will play their part in helping us to realise our ambitions for this remarkable place, both as a place of worship and a place that is known by and visited by many, both in this country and abroad."
