Ministers over 70 no longer to take funerals

by Michael Ford last modified 26 Mar, 2020 10:42 PM

Bishops Karen and Andrew have written to all clergy and LLMs, advising that ministers over 70 should now refrain from taking funeral services.

Bishop Andrew said:

"Many of you will have been self-isolating and rightly cautious about engaging in any active ministry at this time.

"Now that we are all required to remain at home, this restraint has become even more necessary. For those of you over 70, I must ask that you refrain from taking funeral services, in accordance with the unfolding guidance from the national church."

Bishop Andrew also commented:

"What times we are living through – and how quickly life has changed from our familiar routines. The suspension of public worship and closure of our church buildings matters deeply to us, goes against the grain: the last thing we would wish to do in a crisis is give up the habit of meeting together.

"While apart, however, we are intensely aware of our oneness – and compelled by the love of Christ to continue our pursuit of peace and common life. Thank you for all you have been contributing to this: I'm so impressed with the creativity and care our churches are displaying and the varying ways in which the good news of Christ is being shared and heard in every place."
