Mind the Gap
Equality champion Wanda Wyporska is coming to Dorset to talk about the poverty gap and how we can lessen it.
Dr Wyporska, the executive director of the Equality Trust, will lead an event at St Mark’s Church, Talbot Village, as a guest of the Dorset Equality Group (DEG).
The event called 'Mind the Gap – an Economy where All can Thrive?' begins at 6pm on Thursday 28th November.
It will encourage participants to thrash out how to reduce the poverty gap between a multi-millionaire who might live in Sandbanks, for example, and a single parent in Boscombe trying to live on tax credits.
Organisers say that research proves that everyone is better off in more equal societies. Those on high incomes are healthier and happier in Japan and Denmark - where the gap is much smaller - than they are in the UK or the US where it is wide and ever-widening.
DEG member and former MP, Dame Annette Brooke said that growing inequality is the most important thing which successive governments have not tackled:
“We’re becoming such a divided country, it’s not healthy – fairness and justice are so important.”
The event which includes a light supper is free but booking is essential via this link, or emailing Sharen Green.
