Making the Most of Music
Church musicians have been challenged to learn from contemporary music styles, as well as employing greater use of young people’s skills and talents. They tackled a theme of ‘Developing Music and Worship in a Changing Culture’ during the Diocesan Music in Worship Day at the Wiltshire Music Centre, Bradford on Avon, on Saturday (10 November).
Specialists led a variety of workshops, including musical composition, Plainchant, use of instruments, musical excellence with minimal resources, and the use of music in ‘alternative’ worship services. The main speaker was Andrew Maries of the Keynote Trust, a respected consultant for church liturgy and music.
He said, “We need to develop a greater variety of style. It’s time to move away from musical monocultures – whether West Coast Californian worship songs, or narrow traditional models of church music. Let’s cultivate an openness to every kind of musical expression which will enrich worship.”
Event organiser Chris Moorsom said, “There was a good buzz of interest and creative activity, and I received plenty of positive remarks during the day. Many also thought the venue suited this kind of event: this was clearly worthwhile and enjoyable for those who attended.”
