Let the concert season begin: April concerts at Salisbury Cathedral
Saturday 2 April’s performance of Elgar’s masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius, by The Salisbury Musical Society conducted by David Halls, heralded a run of wonderful concerts taking place in the Cathedral during April.
Alongside the services and prayers for Holy Week and Easter, next week’s Holy Week concert at 19.30 on Wednesday 13 April features Allegri's Miserere, with its soaring top Cs from the trebles contrasted with passages of plainsong, and Gerald Finzi's magnificent anthem, Lo, the full, final sacrifice.
Finzi, who lived and worked in Aldbourne in Wiltshire from 1933-1939, wrote his masterpiece Lo, the full, final sacrifice in 1946. It is a setting of words by the 17th century poet Richard Crashaw, exploring themes of Christ's sacrifice for the sins of the world in the context of the Eucharist.
The programme also includes choral music by Byrd, Sanders and Poulenc and organ works by Bach, Demessieux and Howells.
Ten days later, at 19.00 on 23 April, the Cathedral hosts Vivat Regina!, a concert celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Central Band of the Royal British Legion, directed by Captain David Cole, OBE, MVO. The band is joined by the St John Singers and The Commonwealth Children’s Choir for this memorable concert.
The following week, Saturday 30 April, we launch the organ festival to mark the return to service of our renowned Father Willis organ. The celebratory festival, which was delayed for two years due Covid-19 disruption, officially opens with a concert given by the internationally acclaimed organist, Thomas Trotter.
Trotter performs a dazzling programme of works by Bach, Duruflé, Gardner, Mozart, Volans, and the thrilling Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue by Healey Willan.
The April concert is the first of eight monthly organ concerts with a stellar line-up of performers including David Briggs, Anna Lapwood and Richard Pinel, plus the return of the popular Organ Prom in August and a family performance of Peter and the Wolf in November.
