Hosted by kind permission of the Dean of Salisbury, the day marks a further collaboration between the Cathedral’s Learning and Outreach department and the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education. The event fits with the current Cathedral theme of ‘relationships’ and celebrates both the launch of a restorative schools ethos and the start of a two-year action research project.

Originally piloted by Judith Finney, former headteacher of Dilton Marsh CE Primary School, the ‘Restorative Justice’ scheme has potentially huge implications. When conflicts arise, the approach gives both sides a chance to air their views, analyse what happened, reach agreement and prevent further harm.

Judith says, “The restorative ethos teaches those involved to take responsibility for their feelings and actions, understand someone else’s point of view, reach agreement and restore relationship.

“This scheme requires little training. It is manageable, low-cost and staggeringly effective, with proven results in changing behaviour. Who knows what positive effects would result if it was used to tackle conflict in our communities?”

The morning will be mainly taken up with children’s activities led by the Cathedral education team, with presentations to VIPs on each school’s experience in adopting a restorative ethos and further discussions. 30 children from each of five schools will represent a cross-section of the diocese; VIPs include three High Sheriffs of Wiltshire, past and present.

A discussion will follow the day’s activities.
