"Invaluable Advice" for Churches

“They are a source of invaluable advice and it is a privilege to welcome them to Salisbury for their Annual Conference,” said the Bishop of Salisbury.

For the first time they will be joined for part of their conference by Diocesan Environmental Officers. The Church of England has a commitment to environmental care. Through schemes such as Eco-Church, Living Churchyards and the Big Shift to using renewable energy, churches are committed to reducing their carbon footprint and increasing bio-diversity as ways of caring for God’s creation.

The Bishop of Salisbury is the Church of England’s lead bishop on the environment. He is hosting the conference with The Archdeacon of Sarum, The Venerable John Seaford and Sue Cannings from our own DAC. The Annual Meeting will be chaired by Sir Tony Baldry, of the Cathedral and Church Buildings Council.

The Bishop said, “There are some tensions between caring for a Grade I listed building and ensuring it is environmentally friendly. Increasingly we are seeing how these agendas fit together as part of the mission and purpose of the local church.”

Salisbury has had some unwelcome publicity recently. The Bishop hopes that these visitors for their two day conference will enjoy our world famous city and see more than the recent Russian visitors who were here for two days and saw only the 123m spire and our wonderful gothic Cathedral!

The conference will include visits to churches in the Diocese of Salisbury at Blandford Forum and Milton on Stour as well as visits to St Martin’s, St Thomas and St Francis in the City. There will be a special Evensong at the Cathedral and dinner in The Guildhall at which the speaker will be Loretta Minghella, the Church of England’s First Estates Commissioner.
