Inspiring Vistas

The way in which Salisbury Cathedral has inspired artists like Constable and Turner is the subject of a lecture next month.

Adrian Green, director of Salisbury Museum, has chosen Salisbury Cathedral: Inspiration and Vision as the title of his talk on 16^th September to the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral.

Mr Green, who has worked in museums for 20 years, will look at how Salisbury Cathedral has inspired art from the 17^th to the 21^st century.

He said: “I am delighted to have been asked to be the speaker at this year’s Friends’ Day.

“We will explore the motivations for depicting the cathedral, ranging from the historic through to the patriotic and deeply personal.

“As well as featuring famous works by John Constable and JMW Turner, we will look at lesser known works by artists such as Henri de Cort, Frank Newbould and Kate Giles.”

Mr Green has overseen the development of the Wessex Gallery at Salisbury Museum and major exhibitions on Constable, Turner and Rex Whistler.

Before arriving at Salisbury Museum, he worked at the Museum of London and then managed Bromley Museum Service.

He has a degree in archaeology from University College London and a masters in museum studies from Leicester University.

He is an associate member of the Museums Association and lives in Salisbury with his wife and three children.

• Friends’ Day begins in the North Transept of the Cathedral with the AGM, followed by the lecture.

Members can then enjoy lunch in the refectory before choosing between a range of experiences: a tour of Salisbury Museum, a talk on Harnham Water Meadows by trustee Jan Fitzjohn followed by a walk on the meadows, a graffiti tour around the cathedral and a tower tour.

Cream teas in the refectory are followed by an organ recital and evensong, at which boy probationers will be made up to choristers.
