Help a Dorset Resident Survive Winter’s Bitter End

Dorset’s only resident bishop has joined the Dorset Community Foundation in calling for people not to forget those struggling to afford to heat their homes in the face of the ‘Beast from the East’.

The Rt Revd Karen Gorham, Bishop of Sherborne, called for donations to the Dorset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal, which helps local older people suffering during the winter months from the combined effects of fuel poverty and social isolation.

The Rt Revd Karen Gorham, Bishop of Sherborne, said:

“Many self-reliant older people are at risk at the moment, particularly if they turn down their heating to save money after many days of very low temperatures followed by the current heavy snow.

“There has been a great response so far to this appeal. However, it’s not too late and this weather focuses our attention on those who struggle.

“Any donation can help someone in fuel poverty get through the current crisis and insulate their home for the future. People can donate online via localgiving.org/appeal/SWA/ or send a cheque made out to Dorset Community Foundation to Dorset Community Foundation, The Spire, High Street, Poole, BH15 1DF.”

“If you are over 50 and need help with heating your home, you can contact your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau. I’m also hoping to raise awareness among people who might know an older person in need – people like home helps, church visitors, family friends – that they can also refer people for help.”

The £200 grants for people over 50 are being dispersed through the Citizens Advice Network, which can be contacted on 01929 775500, and The Centre for Sustainable Energy on 0300 003 7023. The Dorset Community Foundation has already paid over 120 grants this winter.
