Heatwave, Warm Community

A Poole church found the recent heatwave the perfect opportunity to generate some warm community spirit.

St. Peter’s, Parkstone, one of Dorset's largest and most beautiful churches, attracted hundreds to the 99^th annual Summer Fayre on the Ashley Cross Green. The warm summer sunshine encouraged families to visit the Fayre, which was organised by parishioners and supported by local businesses, community groups and charities.

Heralded by David Squire, the country’s longest serving town crier, Councillor Lindsay Wilson, Mayor of Poole, opened this year’s Fayre. A wide variety of stalls offered Dorset food products, art, crafts, plants, hand-made cards, Swarovski jewellery, henna tattoos, and the usual books, china, pottery, toys and games. A range of fairground attractions, along with a children’s craft activity corner and face painting ensured there was plenty to keep younger family members amused.

Visitors relaxed to entertainment from the Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s C of E Junior School pupils, under the direction of award-winning music teacher Lucy Johnstone-McCarthy. Steel pan playing is a music tradition at the school and its popularity is growing. Local vocalist, Hannah Gough, a gifted soloist, entertained Fayre-goers whilst home-made cakes and sandwiches, delicious hot food and scrumptious ice-cream created a party atmosphere.

As always, the fun dog show attracted an impressive array of canine varieties and brought mirth to watching spectators.

Talented Poole artist, Lisa Berkshire, exhibited items of art from her Illustrated World exhibition displaying virtues of mermaids, ornate sea stones and items from the deep, whilst Maureen Fripp’s range of Swarovski and cold enamel jewelry created great interest.

“It was a marvelous day and a terrific event.” said the Rector of St. Peter’s, Fr Michael Camp. 

“It is reassuring to see a great community spirit among families experiencing fun and enjoyment throughout what is clearly a happy day.  I am delighted to witness so much joy.”
