Good news for Amesbury Roof Appeal
Amesbury Abbey has received over £20,000 in donations since they announced an emergency appeal for urgent roof repairs.
As well as cheques to the value of £20,575 (with the £20K eligible for gift aid), Amesbury Abbey (also known as St Mary and St Melor) have also been offered at least one interest-free loan, on top of the £50,000 loan offered by the Diocese.
A spokesperson for the Abbey said the recent publicity around their appeal had seen a great response:
"Our prayers are being answered with people's tremendous generosity with many donations from outside our immediate area."
The Diocese stepped in to offer help after architects discovered that the roof of the church was close to collapse.
The roof is held up by giant wooden trusses and damage to the middle truss requires urgent repair, as it is at a high risk of collapse.
The Archdeacon of Sarum has led the Diocesan response, meeting with Church representatives, a Structural Engineer, and the Architect.
The PCC has been assured that, as part of the Diocese of Salisbury, the Abbey Church at Amesbury will be supported and advised in their effort to raise the finances necessary for the renewal of a wonderful building, an important part of an historic town.
