From Cancer to Coast
Every 2 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. A number of our parishioners raise money to fund research into preventing and curing this condition.
Prostate Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men in the UK, with more than 11,500 dying from it each year - one every 45 minutes. One of our parishioners aims to raise £1,000 to combat it.
Ben Wightman says:
"I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in November 2018, thanks to my then GP, Dr Craig Wakeham.
"I had further tests and had my prostate removed by robotic surgery. The whole process was very speedy, from initial diagnosis to having treatment, was completed inside 6 weeks. I can say now I'm cancer FREE!
"I cannot sing the praises enough of the care I received from nurses, surgeons and support staff at both Dorset Community Hospital and Bournemouth Hospital, where I had the surgery.
"So, I am walking the Jurassic Coast Path - about 95 miles - to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK, which will go towards funding research for this disease. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and by 2030 it will be the most commonly diagnosed cancer.
"Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition: to stop men from dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting science over the next 10 years, to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment prevention, and support, the organisation hopes to stop prostate cancer being a killer.
"More money is needed for treatment, hence my plan to complete this walk and raise, I hope, loads of money! I have set up a JustGiving page and have somebody walking with me every day. I would stress it's not a man-only event!"
