Archbishop Tutu was a Sarum Canon. Sarum Canons are appointed under the Salisbury Cathedral Constitution and Statutes dated the 1 July 2011. They are appointed by the Bishop after consultation with the Cathedral Chapter, and they are a way in which the Bishop and cathedral are able to honour those from outside the diocese who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Church. Archbishop Desmond was appointed by Bishop David Stancliffe in 2008, when he spent some time in Salisbury. During this time he served in many ways, including speaking at the International Festival, presiding at the eucharist in the cathedral, and leading an assembly in the Salisbury Cathedral School.
