Flags of Thanks for the Homeless
Flags decorated for the Armed Forces Day 2019 celebrations hosted in Salisbury will become much needed practical items for the homeless, as part of a collaborative project between the Wiltshire homeless charity Alabaré and the BBC’s Sewing Soldier.
For the 2019 celebrations, across the country people will be asked to create ‘Flags of Thanks’.
The fabric flags, that can be either quilted, appliquéd or embroidered and include military themed images or literal messages of thankfulness, will be created to demonstrate gratitude and support for the Armed Forces Community, from those currently serving, to veterans and cadets.
Local ‘Flags of Thanks’ will be displayed in a public exhibition during the event in June, in the City’s oldest Church, St Thomas’s.
Afterwards, the general public will be able to sponsor having a flag made into a practical item, such as a sleeping bag, poncho or quilt at a workshop run by Lt Col Neil Stace, known as the Sewing Soldier following his appearance on the BBC’s Sewing Bee.
Their sponsorship will go towards Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans, helping to change the lives of Armed Forces Veterans who are homeless and vulnerable.
