Earth Hour 2021

by Michael Ford last modified 02 Apr, 2021 12:42 AM

The annual #EarthHour switch-off of electricity has garnered celebrity support and reached millions of people across the world.

The likes of Pope Francis, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, actress Sofía Vergara, Kenyan long-distance athlete Eliud Kipchoge and others all pledged support and used their profile to raise awareness.

In all, 192 countries and territories participated, sharing pictures, messages and videos as they did so, seeking to 'shine a spotlight on the health of our planet'. There is footage of city lights going dark here, along with activists seeking to make a difference.

#EarthHour posts have appeared in over 6.7 billion social media feeds.

In our Diocese, Harnham Parish lit a candle and shared the World Wildlife Fund's 'My Footprint' calculator, to check consumptions and build good habits with a mixture of easy wins and more challenging choices.

In West Moors, Becky Muckle tweeted the Vicarage candles as they marked the occasion and offered prayers.
