While it isn't exactly The Open, our Diocesan Golfers have won the the Church Illustrated Cup in the annual Inter-Diocesan Golf Tournament.

11 dioceses took part, including a team from the Scottish Episcopal Church, in the annual Church of England Golf Tournament that has been held since 1965, and our Diocesan team of Archdeacon Antony MacRow-Wood, with the Revds Nick Clarke, Andrew Sinclair and Charlie Boyle, won the Church Illustrated Cup for the handicap competition with a score of 138.

The Cup harks back to the earliest days of the competition when it was sponsored by the publication Church Illustrated, which presented the oldest of the trophies that are now competed for.

Today's tournament is sponsored by the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group.

Dioceses enter teams of 4 players for a competition now comprising 18 holes of singles and 9 holes of 4-ball play. Scoring is according to the Stableford scoring system, which awards points at every hole for each player's score in relation to par, and the three best singles results and both 4-ball results from each team are combined to give a final score for each diocese.

There are trophies for both the best scratch (non-handicap) and handicap score, and also for the best scores for individual players.

The last time our Diocese won one of the major prizes was in 2008 when they also won the Church Illustrated Cup at Frilford Heath Golf Club.
