Cress, Acorns and Education
A number of our parishes have international links, as well as the desire to see transformation in their local communities and the restrictions around Covid aren't stopping them from making a difference.
This Saturday 5th September, Jamie Melville from the Wylye and Till Valley Benefice will walk the Clarendon Way and part of the Monarch Way from Winchester Cathedral, via Salisbury Cathedral and on to Great Wishford.
The route is approximately 34 miles or 54 kilometres long, much of which has been trodden by pilgrims for many years. In this case, the journey is also to raise funds for 2 organisations.
CRESS is a local Christian charity based in the Chalke Valley. It was founded 10 years ago in order to support South Sudanese with agricultural training, education and a medical clinic, and continues to do so as they have been refugees in Northern Uganda since 2017. The Rt Revd Bishop Joseph Aba leads the project in the country, assisted by Bishop Emmanuel Murye of Kajo Keji, Bishop Seme Nigo Abinda of Panyana, and Bishop James Kenyi of Morobo.
The Acorn Appeal, launched by the Acorn Education Trust, seeks to raise funds for their pupils and families suffering as a result of the pandemic, and is seeing a growing need for their support. Great Wishford Primary School will receive some of the proceeds.
Jamie hopes to complete the distance in a day, and raise funds and awareness of the great work accomplished by CRESS and The Acorn Trust.
He says:
"Childrens' education is fundamental - to the South Sudanese refugees in Northern Uganda which CRESS is supporting, to the children local to Great Wishford in the case of the school, and to the wider Warminster area in the case of the Acorn Trust.
"It would be thrilling if this manages to garner support, but it will also be great to make both the Acorn Appeal and the work of CRESS better known."
