Coping with Covid in South Sudan
One of our most meaningful and long-standing partnerships as a Diocese is with the Episcopal Church of Sudan and South Sudan.
For over 40 years, the link has grown in depth, detail and reach down to grass roots, and a number of our deaneries and parishes have direct links with Sudanese Christians on the ground.
We have raised over £78,000 in our recent diocesan appeal [story here], and there is more to come as our new trust fund is set up [story here].
St Mark’s Salisbury has a long partnership with Yei in South Sudan where, as well as Bishop Allison Theological College (before relocation to Uganda) and the Technical College, Immanuel Kindergarten provides education and community support.
Carolyn Murray, who trained as a teacher in Salisbury, got her first taste of Africa as a student, and ever since she has been a tireless, hugely successful advocate for the Kindergarten.
Carolyn divides her life between working in education in the UK and supporting the work of Immanuel, and was awarded an MBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honours for her work.
Carolyn is currently fundraising for the school during the Covid pandemic to promote reliable information on protection and to prevent exploitation of vulnerable girls in this crisis. She has the support of St Mark’s members in prayer and giving.
Information about the Kindergarten, details of how they are helping, and how to join in are on the website www.immanuelkindergarten.org and the Immanuel Facebook page.
The photos below show something of the boys’ and girls’ awareness sessions, radio talk shows and some girls and boys planning the drama that was aired several times over the radio to reach other young people with the same messages. All participants received 5 pieces of soap.
