Church choir gets upgraded to "cathedral" standard

by Michael Ford last modified 06 Nov, 2020 11:29 PM

International social media giant Facebook has paid unwitting tribute to All Saints Church Choir, Wyke Regis, by mistaking their excellent singing for that of a cathedral choir.

Earlier this week, some members of All Saints got together to record some carols for Christmas in advance of the lockdown, for use on the church's live stream if the lockdown is not lifted on 2nd December.

To alert parishioners, a short video was posted on the church's Facebook page.

However, the video was muted by Facebook, with the explanation that its software had detected a broadcast a recording of "O Little Town of Bethlehem by Michael Nicholas sung by The Choir of Norwich Cathedral".

Gary Hepburn, churchwarden of All Saints church who was doing the video, said:

"It's a great accolade for Facebook to think our choir was Norwich Cathedral Choir, but I can assure them it was all live and our choir's own work, accompanied by Derek Griffin on the organ, not a recording by someone else!

"Because Facebook is such a large organisation we have been unable to speak to anyone to put them right on this."

Gary added:

"We are very grateful for the hard work of our choir and other church volunteers who have done everything possible to ensure the church can continue to provide services and other activities for the community throughout the coronavirus pandemic".

Wyke Regis has a YouTube Live Channel and a Facebook Group.
