Christian Aid Week: Big Brekkies, and Bishop joins walkers

by Michael Ford last modified 21 May, 2019 06:35 PM

Parishes hosted Big Brekkies to raise money, and a sponsored 'Wiltshire White Horses Walk' over 4 days (27 to 30 April) took in eight Wiltshire white horses around Westbury, Devizes, Broad Town, Marlborough, Pewsey and Alton Barnes.

The team at St James' Avebury was ready for action from 8.30am.

The Revd Maria Shepherdson said, "Food for our Big Brekkie was donated by the Avebury Community Shop - bacon butties, homemade hot cross buns and muffins, and more jam than Jerusalem!"

Christian Aid supporters in Devizes came up with a new idea to raise money for Christian Aid Week 2019. This year, the charity is focusing on mothers in Sierra Leone who suffer from a lack of medical support during childbirth - ten women die every day in child birth in Sierra Leone. These mothers desperately need better access to trained staff and medical centres.

The event began with a Big Brekkie in Westbury, and refreshments were provided by Christian Aid supporters along the way, in a selection of cafes, pubs and village halls.

Among the walkers were our own Bishop Andrew and the Revd Jennifer Totney.

Yvonne Penn, Wiltshire’s Regional Co-ordinator said: “A resilient team of walkers weathered storms and sunshine as they visited the eight white horses.

“With walkers stemming from several different Churches in North Wiltshire to raise funds for Christian Aid, they will have raised in excess of £2,000.

“On Day four, the last day of the walk, the walkers were joined for the first hour by the Bishop of Ramsbury, Reverend Dr Andrew Rumsey.

“A huge thank you to the Christian Aid supporters from Devizes who led the event."

The marathon hike has raised over £2,500 to date.
