Christian Aid Week 2019
This week is Christian Aid Week and around the Diocese our parishes will be hosting Big Brekkies in aid of the charity, while dedicated volunteers will be out and about delivering Christian Aid giving envelopes, then collecting them, hopefully full of cash for the cause.
After the longest-running fundraising week in the UK, the money raised goes to programmes run by the charity globally, but every year they focus on one area and programme, and this year the main focus is on childbirth in Sierra Leone.
Christian Aid wants to help women in the world's most dangerous place to give birth.
To help explain the problems women face in Sierra leone, Christian Aid are telling Jebbeh's story.
Jebbeh is heavily pregnant. As her baby grows, her joy is overshadowed by fear. Recently, Jebbeh’s sister, Fatmata, was pregnant in a village nearby.
Due to a chronic lack of healthcare, her sister had no choice but to walk for three hours, under the baking sun, to the nearest hospital to give birth.
Jebbeh told Christian Aid:
"My sister was crying out with hunger. She died on the side of the road. She never gave birth."
The Charity say that no woman should die in childbirth. But for Jebbeh, this wasn’t just any woman, this was her sister:
"Please help and pray for us, so that mums will not continue to die in Sierra Leone. All mums should live."
Tragically, ten more women like Jebbeh’s sister will die today from giving birth in Sierra Leone. As her due date looms closer, Jebbeh fears she could be next.
