Chilly Day, Successful Fete

The unseasonably chilly weather didn’t stop a bumper crowd enjoying a warm atmosphere at the annual fête for the Salisbury-Sudans Medical Link at the Bishop of Salisbury’s home, South Canonry.

Around 800 people attended the popular annual event on Sunday afternoon, and as of Monday morning, with some late donations still expected, more than £12,000 has been raised to purchase basic but lifesaving medical equipment for South Sudan, one of the world’s poorest countries.

Helen Holtam, who was the main organiser for the event, said, “Huge thanks go to the team of people who worked so hard on the day and for months before who made this event such a success.

“Chilly weather did not prevent us from having lots of fun at this most quintessentially English of days out. Lady Chichester’s Bactrian camels from Mongolia, Therese and Timujen, were stars of the show as always.

“We are hugely grateful to the Amesbury Town Band and Salisbury Cathedral Junior Choir for such lovely musical accompaniment.

“This lovely day out is fun for people of all ages, bringing the generations together. It raises money to purchase basic medical equipment and train midwifes and clinical staff for South Sudan, one of the world’s poorest countries. The support of people in Salisbury is much appreciated by people in a country where even basic antibiotics and painkillers are often difficult to come by. Your support for the fete changes lives and saves lives.”
