Celebrating the Living Soil
The organisers of a special eco event are inviting people to bring a handful of earth with them to the event.
Hilfield Friary is 'Celebrating the Living Soil', a day of celebration of the importance of soil to all life on Earth, especially in the face of changing climate, organised by Dorchester Churches Together Eco Group.
The organisers want those coming along to bring a handful of soil with them that can be examined and discussed with experts.
Those attending will learn about composting, green manure, worms and other creatures living in the soil.
There will be a soil map of Dorset and much more and a space for quiet contemplation will be created in the church.
There will be also be 3 keynote speakers.
Mark Kibblewhite, Emeritus Professor of Soil Science and a trustee and a vice chair of Dorset Wildlife Trust will speak about the living soil and how it benefits us.
Tim Stephens from Wessex Water will talk about his work and the role of soil in providing clean, plentiful water, and Tim Bowden, Adviser with Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group Southwest will discuss moves in farming towards methods that better protect and replenish soil.
All 3 speakers will also join a panel discussion and there will also be a range of activities, displays and stalls exploring soil.

The event is on Saturday 25th of April.
