New book reveals history of storied Wiltshire church

A new illustrated history has brought to life the story of one of Wiltshire’s most historic parish churches.

St Mary’s Great Bedwyn: Celebrating 1,100 Years has been jointly produced by the Friends of St Mary’s and the Bedwyn History Society. Proceeds go to the upkeep of the church. The book consists of 88 glossy pages and dozens of photographs.

David Harris, Treasurer of the Bedwyn History Society, said, “This has been in the minds of two people in the village, both former churchwardens of St Mary’s, for several years. It was felt with so much history that this publication would be of great interest not only to parishioners here, but more widely.

“This has proved to be the case. In the first month, we sold more than half of the books printed.

“The highlight of the book is perhaps the description of the history of religion by Alan Deboo, and the illustrations both historical and contemporary have been widely praised.”

The Revd Michael McHugh, Team Rector of the Savernake Benefice, also praised the publication, saying, “The book sums up the knowledge of a number of people who have taken an active interest in the history of Great Bedwyn parish. It is very well illustrated and brings out the rich history of a building which is older than Salisbury Cathedral.”

Copies can be purchased for £15 from David Harris on 01672 870 133 or .
