Casting the Net

by Michael Ford last modified 26 Jul, 2016 12:53 PM

This month, the six churches in the Milton Abbas and Winterborne Valley Benefice are reaching out into their communities, celebrating all that is good in their villages with a range of sea-themed events, scarecrows and spectacular displays.

The three-week mission started with a service in each of the six churches on Sea Sunday, 10 July. Activities include exhibitions, concerts, dances, games afternoons, and talks on ‘wrecks’ and sea conservation.

Organiser Harriet Ryan says, “Although situated some distance from the sea, quite a number of people have maritime links. The main focus is to celebrate our community and we are grateful that the festival is supported with some funding from the Aldhelm Mission Fund as well as from our local churches.

“It is a great excuse to visit beautiful churches to see how they have been decorated to embrace the sea theme!”

Beautiful flower arrangements and cream teas are also featured. Nautical scarecrows are on display in all the villages until they join the final Celebration Service at St Mary’s Winterborne Whitechurch on 31 July at 11am.

Events still to come:
‘Come and Sing’ at St Mary’s Winterborne Whitechurch (Wed 27, 6-7pm)
‘Messy Games’ at Winterborne Stickland Sports Club (Sat 30, 2-5pm)
‘Jigging in the Rigging’ at the Pamela Hambro Hall, Winterborne Stickland with the Stickland Swing Band (Sat 30, 7.30-10.30pm)
