BSL for All!

by Michael Ford last modified 08 Jan, 2020 11:54 AM

Our Diocesan Chaplain to the Deaf Community is offering a British Sign Language (BSL) Taster Course that is open to everyone.

The Reverend Neil Robinson, who became the first deaf person who uses BSL to be appointed as as full time Minster to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing People, will hold the 10-week course from May to July.

Neil, a profoundly deaf BSL user, was licensed to his role in October in a move that was welcomed by the National Church as well as by the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Neil explains:

"British Sign Language is a visual language in its own right. It is a part of the Deaf culture. As a profoundly deaf ordained priest, I use BSL frequently as my preferred method of communication.

"Have you seen the beauty of Deaf people talking silently in their own language? That is British Sign Language! Does this attract your desire to learn sign language? I have just the thing for you!

"I would like to announce that there is a course available for you, which is called ‘BSL Taster Course’. This course is aimed at anyone who may express an interest in learning this wonderful language, and it is a perfect place for anyone who knows nothing about this language. This course will take place over 10 weeks, beginning on Tuesday 5th May 2020 at 7.30pm, the last session being Tuesday the 14th July 2020.

"This course will take place at SP2 Hope Centre in Room 1 & 2. I will be your patient and friendly tutor. My wife, Helen, will assist also."

The venue address is SP2 Hope Centre, 159-161 Fisherton Street, Salisbury SP2 7RP.

For more information about this course, please contact Neil directly via email () or text him on 07717 055219. More details will be provided nearer the time.

If you would like to register your interest in this course, please contact Nick Baker direct at St Paul’s Salisbury on 01722 334005 (ext 206).
